How to Mount a Camera on a Kite

How to Mount a Camera on a Kite thumbnail
Use a waterproof camera to prevent damage in case the camera gets wet.

Attaching a camera to a kite allows you to capture a birds-eye view from up in the air. Many kite surfers position cameras on their kites to view themselves surfing. Set the camera settings to capture a photograph every ten seconds to take amazing unique photographs from the sky. Using Velcro, a neoprene camera case and glue, anyone can make a kite camera at home.

Instructions

    • 1

Use a knife to cut a 50mm slot on either side of the neoprene camera case. Neoprene material feels like a wet suit. The neoprene camera case has a zipper to ensure the camera doesn't fall out. The Pentax Optio-W20 waterproof digital camera works and fits very well with a neoprene camera case.

    • 2

Use the knife to cut a hole the size of the lens in front of the camera case. This will allow the camera lens to see out of the case.

    • 3

Insert a 6" long strip of 50 mm Velcro through the slots cut into the camera case. Center the case in the middle of the Velcro strap.

    • 4

Use glue to attach a strip of soft sided Velcro to the back of the camera case. The Velcro strip should stretch the length of the case.

    • 5

Apply glue to the center strut of your kite where you wish to mount the camera. Wrap a piece of rough sided Velcro around the strut where you applied the glue.

    • 6

Attach the camera to the kite with the lens facing away from the kite. Align the camera on the strut and wrap the strap around the center strut attaching the Velcro camera strap to the Velcro glued to the strut. Apply pressure to the Velcro strap to ensure the Velcro is properly seated and secure.
