Reinstall language options to get Windows to use your language.

When you install Windows, the installation program will ask you to set your language options. If you speak English, you will probably choose English. Users in other countries may select other languages. The language that you choose determines the character set that Windows uses when displaying text. It also determines the layout of your keyboard. If your language preferences change, you can add additional languages without reinstalling Windows.

Instructions

    • 1

Click the Windows "Start" menu button and select "Control Panel."

    • 2

Click the "Regional and Language Options." If you do not see the "Regional and Language Options" tab, click the "Date, Time, Language and Regional Options" tab and then click "Add other language." The Regional and Language Options" window will open.

    • 3

Click the "Languages" tab at the top of the "Regional and Language Options" window. Click "Details." The "Text Services and Input Languages" window will open.

    • 4

Click "Add" to display the "Add Input Language" window.

    • 5

Click the "Input Language" drop-down box and select the language that you want to add. If you want to change the keyboard layout, click the "Keyboard layout/ME" drop-down box and select a language. You will probably want to select the same language that you selected in the "Input Language" drop-down.

    • 6

Click "OK" to close the "Add Input Language" window.

    • 7

Click the "Settings" tab at the top of the "Text Services and Input Languages" window. Click the "Default Input Language" drop-down and select the language that you want Windows to use as the default language.

    • 8

Repeat the previous four steps to add additional languages.

Tips & Warnings

  • Windows will display a "Language Bar" button near your computer clock if you install more than one language. Click that button to switch between languages.
