How to Burn a CD Using a Mac

How to Burn a CD Using a Mac thumbnail
Mac OS X has drag and drop functionality that makes CD burning quick and easy.

CDs are an economical and easy way to share information with friends or create backups for safe keeping. You can also copy files from one computer to another. Mac's OS X software makes drag and drop burning possible without additional software. Mac's Finder can create and complete the CD burning process right from the desktop. This process will create a data CD, not to be confused with an audio CD, with data that can only be accessed on a computer.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

From your Mac desktop, select "File" from the menu, then pull down to "New Burn Folder." Note the burn folder on the desktop. Name the folder--if you wish--by typing in a name. You can also name the folder later in the burn process.

    • 2

Double-click on the burn folder to open it. Locate files or data on your Mac to burn by clicking. Drag the files, then release the mouse to drop them to the new burn folder.

    • 3

Click on the "Burn" button in the upper right hand corner of the burn folder's window.

    • 4

Insert a blank CD into the Mac's optical drive. Click on "Make this action the default" in the dialog window that appears, you want the same action to occur each time you insert a blank disk.

    • 5

Name the disk if you have not already done so, then select the burn speed you desire by clicking on the drill down menu and selecting the speed. Click the "Burn" button to begin the burn process.

    • 6

Follow the status by noting the 'Burn" dialog bar in the window. The CD will mount on the desktop when it is finished burning the data to the disk.

    • 7

Eject the disk and use or share with others.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you play a data CD in a CD player, you will only hear static.
