Homemade caramel apples provide a sweet treat at family events, Halloween parties and bonfires. Making these apples also gives you a way to use up three or four apples that didn't fit in your tart or pie. The one difficult thing about making caramel apples is getting the nuts to stick to the caramel. With practice, even this step won't give you trouble, and you'll be enjoying homemade caramel apples in no time. Does this Spark an idea?

Things You'll Need

  • Double boiler
  • Salt
  • 1 pound caramel candies
  • Water
  • Wooden skewers
  • Fist-sized, crisp, ripe apples
  • Chopped walnuts or peanuts
  • Wax paper

Instructions

      Fill the bottom half of a double boiler with water. Place the top into the bottom and set them on a burner. Unwrap your caramel candies and put them in the top half of the boiler. Sprinkle them with a little salt and add about ½ inch of water to the mix.

      Stir the caramels every few minutes to make sure they melt evenly. The mixture should be a syrupy consistency when it's ready.

      Remove the stems from the apples and wash them thoroughly. Push a wooden skewer down through each apple where the stem was.

      Rip a few sheets of wax paper and lay them on a flat surface. Sprinkle the chopped nuts liberally over two of the sheets. Leave the rest clear for the apples.

      Hold each apple by the skewer and dip it into the caramel. Lift the apple from the caramel and hold it still until it stops dripping. Immediately roll the apple in the chopped nuts, pressing firmly. Set each apple on the empty wax paper sheets. The nuts should stick if you roll them in the caramel right away.
