How to Keep a Car Cool in the Summer

Summer heat that gets trapped inside of your car can make getting into your car to take a quick trip to the grocery store unbearable. If your seats are too hot to sit on or your steering wheel is too hot to touch, you will have to stand outside in the heat while you wait for the hot air inside your car to dissipate. Learning tricks to keep your car cool in the summer makes taking trips in your car more pleasant and easier to deal with.

Instructions

    • 1

Park in well-shaded areas. This isn't always possible, but parking your car in an area behind a building or in a garage where it won't be hit directly by the sun is one of the easiest ways to cool off your car. Well-shaded areas may be at least 10 degrees cooler than sunny areas, creating a cooler environment on the inside of your car.

    • 2

Place heat shields in the front and back windshields of your car. The material creates a shading effect and reflects the heat from the sun away from the inside of your car. This will help keep your seats and steering wheel cool enough to sit on without worry and keeps a large amount of heat from ever entering your car. Use these especially if you are unable to park in a shaded area. You can even find shields to put on your side windows to increase the effect of this cooling technique.

    • 3

Crack your windows slightly. Even the smallest crack in one of your windows allows the hot air to escape from your car and the cool air from the breezes to enter your car. You can roll your windows up at night, as temperatures tend to drop significantly during the night hours. If rain is predicted in the next few hours, be sure to roll the windows up to avoid water damage on the inside of your car.

Check your cars liquids like coolant, oil and battery water. Make sure the fluids are clean and that you have enough of them. Not having enough of these fluids could cause your engine to overheat in combination with the air temperature outside of the car. Keep a close eye on the levels of these liquids all summer long to make sure they don't dip too low.
