How to Insert a Hot Pluggable Disk in a Dell 4600 Server

A Dell 4600 Poweredge Server is a business class computer designed to never be turned off. This includes a series of hot swappable hard drives, which means if a hard drive goes bad, the Drive can be replaced without the server needing to be turned off. This is critical in situations where a business can not afford to have the server off for any reason. This feature adds to the cost of the Server, as it is more expensive for Dell to build this into their server. If your server needs to stay running, this is an essential feature.

Instructions

    • 1

Open the front of the server case by pressing the locking slide switch at the top of the server. The front will come away from the server and will be removable at this time.

    • 2

Determine the bad drive by viewing the indicator lights of the hard drives, as the good drives will flash with green lights and the bad drive will flash amber. These lights are directly above the drives in the system.

    • 3

Pull the bad drive from the server by squeezing the protruding handle together, and the drive will slide out. Read the drive type and size on the label to know what will be the exact replacement drive.

    • 4

Purchase a new hard drive from Dell to replace the non-working hard drive. This is where you will take the information from the old drive and tell Dell what is to be ordered.

    • 5

Insert the new drive into the empty slot until you feel the protruding handle "Click" into place. Once the system recognizes the new drive, it will automatically format it and replace the Data back on the drive.
