How to Mount Tires on a Tire Rack

How to Mount Tires on a Tire Rack thumbnail
Place your spare on the tire rack of your vehicle.

When changing out a flat tire with the spare you will be left with a tire that needs to go back on the tire rack. Whether you are putting the old tire on the car's tire rack, or putting the new spare tire on the rack, you need to mount it correctly. Without a proper fit and mount you risk losing the tire during transport or causing grief to the cars behind you should it fall off.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Lift the tire up to the lug not rods on the tire rack. Align the holes on the wheel to the rack's rods. Place the tire so it rests on the rods threaded through the holes on the wheel.

    • 2

Place the lug nuts on the rods going around in a circle. Hand screw the five lug nuts onto the rack rods.

    • 3

Tighten the lug nuts as tight as possible, turning the tire iron to the right until they cannot be tightened further.

    • 4

Grab the mounted tire on the rack and give it a firm shake to check it is secure on the rack.

    • 5

Cover the tire with the covering and secure any Velcro attachments or tie down straps.
