How to Upgrade From Windows NT 4.0 to Windows XP Pro

A computer running the Windows NT 4.0 operating system can be upgraded to Windows XP Pro (Professional Edition) provided that it meets the XP Pro system requirements (see link in Resources). Initiate the upgrade process using the Windows XP Pro CD. You can use either the full or the upgrade versions of Windows XP Pro to upgrade your operating system. You will be required to enter the product key that came with the Windows XP Pro CD in order to complete the upgrade.

      Start your computer and allow the Windows NT 4.0 desktop to load. Load the Windows XP Pro CD into your computer's DVD-ROM or CD-ROM drive.

      Click "Install Windows XP" on the "Welcome to Microsoft Windows XP" screen that appears. Be sure to select the default option, "Upgrade (Recommended)," as the "Installation Type" on the screen that you are brought to. Click the "Next" button to continue.

      Read the XP Pro "License Agreement" on the next screen that appears. Click the white circle next to "I accept the agreement" to place a dot in it. Click the "Next" button at the bottom of this window.

      Type in the 25-digit product key that came with XP Pro in the provided boxes. Click the "Next" button to continue. Select whether you would like to download updates to the XP Pro "Setup files" on the screen you are taken to. An active Internet connection is required in order to download these files.

      Click the "Next" button at the bottom of the screen to begin the upgrade to XP Pro. If you have opted to download updates to the XP Pro setup files, these files will begin downloading now, and the operating-system upgrade will automatically begin once complete. You will be brought to your Windows XP desktop after the automated portion of the upgrade from Windows NT 4.0 has been completed.

Tips & Warnings

  • Save important files, folders and data to an external storage device before upgrading to avoid potential deletion.

  • Your computer may reboot during the upgrade from Windows NT 4.0.

  • Errors during the XP Pro upgrade process can cause files previously saved on Windows NT 4.0 to be permanently deleted.
