How to Upload a Picture Onto the Internet

How to Upload a Picture Onto the Internet thumbnail
With a few adjustments, photographs can be transferred to the internet.

The e-mail system that was developed in last decade of the 20th century has enhanced the way that people communicate with one another. For tech-savvy students, this might involve pointing a camera-phone at a friend, pressing a few buttons and instantaneously the person's image can be transferred to a third party or a large network of online contacts. For those who might want to send a copy of an old baby picture to a loved one, the process is more involved, but can also lead to a better understanding of how digital images can be transferred by the internet.

Instructions

  1. The Process

    • 1

Open a new folder on your desktop and label it for use as a place to store the original copy of your color photograph. Such a label might read "Baby Pictures," "New Portraits" or "Family Images."

    • 2

Turn on your scanner and place the photograph face down on the screen.

    • 3

Scan the picture and import the image to the new folder that you just created in the first step.

    • 4

Open another new folder and label this folder as "Web Pictures" or something similar.

    • 5

Open your software program and import the scanned picture into the program. If you have a digital camera, the image can be directly transferred to your computer using a USB cable or by removing the media card from your camera and placing that storage device in a media card reader.

    • 6

Re-size the photograph, so the picture is converted to web format. Images for the web need to be converted to a resolution of 72 pixels per inch and need to be in a jpg, png or GIF format. Jpg is by far the most commonly used image file for uploaded images. The process for resizing images varies between the different software programs.

    • 7

Click on your image and then open the "File" heading in Photoshop. Next, hit the "Save For Web" command to adjust the size and quality of the image until it is less than 100 KB; then hit OK and place the image in the "Web Pictures" folder.

In Picasa, double-click on the export icon at the bottom of the Picasa page. This opens a "Export to Folder" box, where all you have do is move the slider scale to reduce the size. Adjust the image quality then hit "export".

Fireworks users can check "Resources" for specific resizing instructions.

    • 8

Send your image to a friend as an email attachment or the picture can be uploaded directly to blogging sites, discussion forums or any other public domain by using the transfer system provided by the online entity.

Tips & Warnings

  • Picasa can be downloaded for free from Google.

  • RAW formats vary slightly with the make of camera and images from some lesser-known cameras may not be compatible with all types of software.

  • Watermarking your images can help prevent picture theft and is available in most programs.

  • Check the guidelines of any public site like Flickr or Wikipedia before posting your images online.
