How to Change the Host Name in Cisco

Configure a host name on Cisco network appliances.

Network devices find each other using a network address, which is usually an IP address unique to the network to which the device is connected. However, since IP addresses are lists of numbers that are difficult for most people to remember, most networked devices also have a "host name" which is a human readable name that can be used to reference the device on the network. Configuring a host name on a Cisco device can be completed in just a few minutes.

Instructions

    • 1

Select the "Globe" start button on the Windows 7 computer, and then select "Programs" and "Accessories." Right-click the command prompt icon that is listed, and click "Run as Administrator" in the menu that appears.

    • 2

Enter "telnet 10.0.0.1" on the command line, replacing the "10.0.0.1" with the IP address of the Cisco device, and then tap the "Enter" key. Enter the telnet access password when requested and tap the "Enter" key.

    • 3

Enter "Enable" on the command prompt and tap the "Enter" key. Enter the Privileged Exec password on the command line when requested and press the "Enter" key.

    • 4

Type "Configure Terminal" and tap the "Enter" key. Then type "hostname Cisco," replacing "Cisco" with the host name you wish to use.

    • 5

Enter the "End" command on the command line, and then type "Copy Run Start" and press the "Enter" key to save the new host name configuration.
