How to Make a Multi Directional HDTV Antenna

How to Make a Multi Directional HDTV Antennathumbnail
The classic look of a TV radio wave antenna.

The key to making a multi-directional HDTV antenna is to attach it to a motorized base. Motorized bases can be remote controlled, allowing for operation even if the antenna is installed in an attic. Radio waves, which is what over-the-air TV signals are, are very directional. Some stations are slightly off the horizontal axis that brings most stations in strongly. The motorized base therefore allows for minute adjustments that make it possible to receive every available station's strongest signal.

    Instructions

    Things You'll Need

    • Motorized base for antenna
    • Connection mechanism
    • Remote control
      • 1

Modify the antenna stand to fit the motorized base. Generally, this means cutting a 10 to 12-inch notch in a wood base. A manufactured antenna, or one with a metal stand, requires no modification.

      • 2

Secure the motorized base in an attic. Most bases have screws that tighten around the inserted base much like ceiling light fixtures.

      • 3

Connect the motor to an existing electrical line. Either plug the power cord into an existing outlet, or splice the hot lead to an existing 120-volt line and attach the ground wire to any metal pipe.

      • 4

Use the remote to change antenna position, and note the position that yields the strongest signals on individual channels.
