The UNIX system is the reason the Internet and email exist today.

The UNIX system is a large part of everyday life. As the Open Group website points out, life as we know it would be radically different if it were ever to disappear. Email as we know it would not exist, for it was UNIX systems that pioneered the first email, which was not Web-based. The UNIX mail system has short, simple steps for users to access their email.

Instructions

      Log into the computer. Type in your username and password.

      Type "mail." This will show you any new messages you may have. To specify the message you want to see, type the numeral of the message.

      Practice replying to the message of your choice. Type "r" for "reply," then type in your text.

      Practice sending new messages. Type "mail" followed by the email address of the person to whom you wish to email. Type your text and then hit "Return."

      Type "q" or "x" to end the session. Type the former if you do not want to see the message queue again; type the latter if you do wish see it.

Tips & Warnings

  • UNIX has a list of diverse commands. According to Brandx.net, you can delete by entering in "d." Undelete by inputting "u." Use "m" and a list of users to send the same message to a group of users.
