How to Upscale DVD to HD

How to Upscale DVD to HD thumbnail
Technology allows users to upscale the image on a DVD, even if the information to do so is absent.

To upscale the quality of a DVD image, movie watchers must use a device that adds pixels to the image and attempts to mimic what the image would look like at a higher definition. Upscaling DVD players perform this service and send the upscaled image to the user's HDTV. Media viewing applications such as Quicktime, VLC and iTunes also perform this task automatically and upscale the image at the computer's maximum resolution settings.

Instructions

  1. Upscaling DVD Players

    • 1

Purchase an upscaling DVD player. These can be purchased from a number of online websites including Fry's, Best Buy and Amazon.

    • 2

Connect the power adapter to the upscaling DVD player and plug the adapter into a power outlet.

    • 3

Plug one end of the HDMI cable into the upscaler and plug the other end into the HDMI output on the television.

    • 4

Open the upscaling DVD player's disc tray and insert the DVD of your choice.

    • 5

Play the DVD with the upscaling DVD player to achieve an upscaled DVD image.

    Media Player Applications

    • 6

Insert the DVD into the disc drive of the computer.

    • 7

Open a media player application such as VLC, Quicktime or iTunes.

    • 8

Play the DVD in the media player application. By default, the media player will upscale the image to the computer's highest resolution.

Tips & Warnings

  • To get even more out of your media player, adjust the "Sharpen" level in the "Video Settings" section of the application's preferences.
