How to Edit a Chapter in an MPEG Video

If you would like to edit a chapter in an MPEG video, you must use a video-editing application that can recognize and edit video in the MPEG file format. While numerous free programs can be found online for creating DVD projects out of MPEG video files, when it comes to actually editing MPEG video, only a couple of free video-editing applications offer support for the MPEG file format.

Instructions

  1. Windows Movie Maker

    • 1

Launch Windows Movie Maker on your computer. Windows Movie Maker comes installed on many Windows computers and works exclusively on the Windows operating system. If you do not have Windows Movie Maker, you can download it for free from the Microsoft website.

    • 2

Import the MPEG video that you want to edit. To import video in Windows Movie Maker, click on the "Import Media" button, in the window that opens, find the file and double-click its name. The MPEG appears in the "Imported Media" pane in the Movie Maker window.

    • 3

Find the chapter in the MPEG video that you want to edit. Windows Movie Maker automatically separates imported video into small, separate clips. To find the clip that contains the movie chapter you want to edit, click on any clip created from the video and press the "Play" button on the preview monitor to view the contents of the clips.

    • 4

Once you find the correct clip, move it down to the timeline. To move the clip, click on it in the "Imported Media" pane, drag it to the "Video" track, and then release the mouse button to drop the clip on the track.

    • 5

Cut the chapter of the video away from the rest of the clip. To cut the chapter away, use the "Split" button to cut the clip right before the beginning of the chapter and right after the end of the chapter, and then click the clip to the left and press "Delete" to remove it from the timeline, and click the clip to the right and press "Delete" to remove it from the timeline.

    • 6

Access Windows Movie Maker's editing tools by clicking the down arrow by "Imported media" and choosing either "Effects" or "Transitions." Movie Maker provides only basic editing tools, such as "Fade In," "Fade Out," "Rotate" and "Zoom." To use a tool, click on the clip in the timeline, and click on the option in the "Effects" or "Transitions" window to apply it to the video clip.

    • 7

Publish the MPEG chapter when you are done editing. Go to "File," then "Publish," enter a name for the file, choose a destination folder and click on "Publish."

    VideoSpin for Windows

    • 8

Download VideoSpin from the Pinnacle Systems website. To download the program, you must provide an email address, and then click the download link provided. Once downloaded, double-click the VideoSpin icon and follow the instructions to install.

    • 9

Launch VideoSpin on your computer and find the MPEG video you want to edit. To find the file in VideoSpin, navigate to the folder on the hard drive that contains the MPEG in the upper pane of the program. Then, drag the MPEG file from the upper pane into the timeline in the lower pane of VideoSpin.

    • 10

Move the scroll bar at the top of the timeline to select the spot on the video clip that is immediately before the chapter of the MPEG you want to edit. Click the razor button to make a cut in the clip. Then, move the scroll bar to the spot immediately after the chapter you want to edit and use the razor button to make your second cut. Click on the clip once before and once after the chapter, and press "Delete" to remove the extra video from the timeline.

    • 11

Use the drop-down menu at the top of the VideoSpin window to select a type of editing tool, such as "Transitions" or "Music and sound effects." Click any tool in the tool list to edit that aspect of the MPEG chapter.

    • 12

Export the edited MPEG chapter. To export the video, go to "Make Movie" tab, pull down the "File Type" menu to select the video format you want to use for export, such as "MPEG-1," MPEG-2" or "MPEG-4." Then click on "Create File" to save the edited MPEG chapter as a new movie file.
