How to Assign Devices on a Router With a Static IP Address

When your computer connects to a router, the router usually assigns an IP address to the device. However, in situations where the router is configured to not automatically assign IP addresses, you have to manually assign the device a static IP address. This isn't too difficult to do, but it does require that you go through the properties of your network card and alter its setup.

Instructions

    • 1

Click on the "Start" button, open the Control Panel and then open the Network and Internet section.

    • 2

Click on the Network and Sharing Center, right-click the connection that you want to set a static IP address for and then click "Properties."

    • 3

Click "TCP/IPv4" and click the "Properties" button, then click on the "Use the following IP address" button.

    • 4

Type in the IP address, subnet mask and default gateway of your router, along with the DNS information (if the router isn't set up to automatically assign the DNS information).
