How Can I Test My Internet Speed?

How Can I Test My Internet Speed? thumbnail
The speed of your Internet connection depends on a variety of factors.

Whether using a dial-up connection, Ethernet or a T-1 line, your Internet speed will almost always vary. Different times of day or high-user times, such as holidays, often affect the speed of your connection. For shared networks or connections, you literally share bandwidth with every other subscriber on the line or in the area. There are two good methods to check your Internet speed.

Instructions

  1. Use Your Computer

    • 1

Go to Control Panel on your computer by clicking the start button and selecting "Control Panel." Click to open your network and Internet center. Most operating systems list this as "network."

    • 2

Click "network status" to go into your specific network's page. Select the network for which you want to check the speed and click "check status."

    • 3

Identify your current connection rate by looking under the "speed" heading. Most personal Internet connection speeds range between 512KBs per second and 54MBs per second.

    Use the Internet

    • 4

Go to an online Internet speed testing website, such as speedtest.net or CNET. Click the "begin" button to start the test. The test will first identify your location and service provider.

    • 5

Check your download speed. When the test is finished, you will see your current download speed displayed on the screen. This is the speed at which you can download files onto your computer from another location.

    • 6

Check your upload speed next. When the test is complete, your current upload speed will be displayed on the screen. This is the speed at which you can upload files from your computer to another location.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you are unable to ascertain your Internet speed, it could be that you are experiencing router or connection problems. Try disconnecting from the Internet for 30 seconds and trying again.

  • Just because you find your Internet connection speed doesn't mean that you will maintain that speed indefinitely. Large downloads and uploads will often affect your connection speed.
