How do I Test Turnout Gear?
Firefighting is a dangerous job that is hard on both the firefighter and his equipment. It is essential that a firefighter's protective turnout gear is tested regularly to ensure it is in good condition. The cumulative effects of dirt, wear and UV rays combine to weaken turnout gear, compromising the protection it provides. Frequent testing and inspection can catch small problems before they become catastrophic failures.
Instructions
-
-
1
Find the manufacture date of the turnout gear. All gear not made within the past 10 years should be removed from service.
-
2
Inspect the outside of the gear visually for wear and contamination. Wash gear using mild soap and warm water if soiled. Ensure all reflective striping is intact.
-
-
3
Inspect the moisture barrier and thermal liner for discoloration and wear. If the inner liner is discolored, remove the gear from service, as this is an indication of integrity loss.
-
4
Test all snaps and fasteners to make sure they're functional and that the inner liner is properly attached to the outer shell.
-
5
Allow turnout gear to dry completely before using if it was washed.

Tips & Warnings
Make sure turnout gear fits properly, as improperly fitted gear is uncomfortable and dangerous.
Turnout gear should be inspected before each use, after cleaning and at least monthly.
Store your turnout gear clear of sunlight. UV rays damage turnout gear and significantly shorten its life span.
Refer to your manufacturer's guidelines when cleaning and inspecting your turnout gear.
Only trained and certified individuals should use and inspect turnout gear.
