How to Write Letters to Single Soldiers

How to Write Letters to Single Soldiers thumbnail
Soldiers value contact in the form of postal letters or email.

Since soldiers in the military are entrusted with the vital task of protecting the country and its people from harm, it is important to show these service members some appreciation. When you write a letter to a single soldier (as opposed to sending letters to entire units of deployed soldiers, which is also possible), it is important to get the right contact information and keep letters positive.

Instructions

    • 1

Visit a website that provides lists of soldiers to whom you can write letters. In some cases you may need to register with the website in order to receive the mailing address of the soldier. These sites allow you to choose a single soldier or a whole unit of soldiers, so be sure to select a single name. Sites include Any Soldier, Military Pen Pal and Operation Military Pride.

    • 2

Choose the option that you prefer: Letters by email or letters by "snail mail." Most sites will allow you to write either type of letter, or even send cards if desired.

    • 3

Choose the name of a soldier who you wish to write. You can normally see limited information about the soldier whom you choose, but will be able to choose names based on sex (male or female is listed next to the name of the soldier in most cases.)

    • 4

Click on the name of the chosen soldier to obtain the address. In most cases you will need to enter your email address since the soldier's address will be sent to you by email.

    • 5

Compose your letter to the soldier. Write to the soldier as if you are writing to a friend. Make casual conversation and tell him something about yourself, your pets or your family. Remember not to ask intrusive questions regarding specific military information or location since the soldier is unable to answer such questions.

    • 6

Wait for a response. Remember that the soldier may not have daily access to mail or email, so be patient. Most soldiers truly value this contact and will write back as soon as possible.

Tips & Warnings

  • Before you send a letter (or a care package) to a soldier, be sure to familiarize yourself with the restrictions for military mail at the United States Postal Service.
