How to Make Stock Chevy Exhaust Pipes Sound Better

How to Make Stock Chevy Exhaust Pipes Sound Better thumbnail
Stainless steel exhaust tips are more corrosive resistant than chrome.

A vehicle's stock exhaust system is designed to balance costs with performance and noise. Stock pipes on a Chevrolet can be improved for both performance and sound profile. Replacing of the muffler or exhaust tip can alter the sound presence of the vehicle. Sound profiles can be muted, amplified or adjusted for tone to make the stock pipes sound better.

Instructions

    • 1

Replace or add a resonated exhaust tip to the stock tail pipe. Exhaust tip design directly affects the tone and sound output of the exhaust system. Resonated tips contain a sound dampening lining, usually fiberglass, that quiets the exhaust.

    • 2

Install an exhaust tip designed to amplify the sound profile. Tips that are dual walled, beveled or flared may make your exhaust sound more noticeable. Exhaust tips that increase in diameter from the exhaust tip connection will also amplify the exhaust. When sliding the exhaust tip over the existing tailpipe, be sure the tail pipe has been cut back sufficiently to allow the exhaust gases to enter the exhaust tip.

    • 3

Replace the muffler. Muffler design directly affects the sound profile of the exhaust system. Mufflers with open chamber designs can deepen the exhaust tone. Installation of glass-packs or noise amplifying exhausts can significantly increase the exhaust sound produced by your Chevy. Muffler designs with multiple chambers and sound dampening materials may be used to quiet the overall exhaust system.

    • 4

Remove the muffler. Replace the open space with exhaust pipe equivalent to the stock system. Without the muffler installed the noise level will be significantly increased.

Tips & Warnings

  • Installation of an exhaust tip does not always require welding. Screw-on, bolt-on or clamp-on tips are available to allow installation with basic tools.

  • Stainless steel exhaust tips will last up to five times longer than chrome, due to the strength of the stainless steel and the corrosion resistance.

  • Because the sound profile of an exhaust system is a personal preference, it is best to find a close example of the change you intend to make. This will allow you to determine if the alteration to your Chevy will produce the desired results.

  • Muffler shops, car shows, and performance tuners will have a variety of vehicles you can inspect to help you with your decision.

  • Removal of the muffler, or addition of noise increasing components, may result in your Chevrolet not meeting local noise level ordinances or some state laws.
