How to Make a Scale Model of the Colosseum
Giving a presentation or an oral report is more memorable when you provide your audience with a visual model about the topic. For example, if you are going to speak about the Colosseum in Rome, you can use craft materials to make a model of the Colosseum so that the class you are speaking to can look at it as you talk. You can build a model from basic materials that you have around the house.
Things You'll Need
- Cardboard, 12 inches square
- Modeling clay
- Scissors
- Drinking straws
- Terra cotta clay
Instructions
-
-
1
Place a 12-inch square of cardboard onto a flat surface.
-
2
Press a ring of modeling wax in a 8 inch circle in the center of the square. Make the circle about 1-inch tall.
-
-
3
Cut a drinking straw in half with scissors.
-
4
Bend a half-piece of drinking straw into an arch, with the ends of the straw about 2-inches apart.
-
5
Press the arched straw into the modeling clay so that the arch stands up.
-
6
Repeat this process four times until the circle on the cardboard has arches going around the entire perimeter.
-
7
Place a piece of modeling clay on the top of each arch. Make each piece of clay about 1/2-inch tall.
-
8
Bend pieces of straw, as before, but press the ends into the pieces of clay at the tops of the arches. This will effectively make arches in between and above the first row of arches.
-
9
Cover the entire surface of the structure with terra cotta clay.
-
10
Sculpt a circle of terra cotta clay on top of the entire structure.
-
11
Allow the clay to dry completely before displaying the model of the Colosseum.
