How to Convert CCF to Therms

How to Convert CCF to Therms thumbnail
Gas suppliers measure gas in two ways, making price comparisons difficult.

Some gas companies charge for the volume of gas you use. Their bills show gas measured in ccf units or hundreds of cubic feet. The amount of energy in every ccf of natural gas can vary, so other gas companies bill you for the amount of energy in the gas they provided. Their bills show gas measured in therms.

Comparing energy prices from different suppliers requires the ability to convert between ccf and therms. A straightforward mathematical formula converts ccf to therms and may help you to find the best deal for your gas supply.

Instructions

    • 1

Enter the ccf value into a calculator. For example, if your gas bill shows you used 100 units of natural gas in ccf, enter 100

    • 2

Multiply the ccf value by 1.025. One ccf is 1.025 therm, so multiplying by 1.025 will convert the ccf value into therms. Write down the answer.

    • 3

Check the calculation for errors. Divide the answer by 1.025 to convert the therm value back into the ccf value. The result will be the number of ccfs with which you started. If it isn't, there was an error, so repeat the calculation.

Tips & Warnings

  • The energy value in gas varies every month. The conversion value of 1.025 is, therefore, an approximate conversion value.

  • The conversion value is so close to 1 that some gas companies consider ccf and therm values to be identical.

  • Exact conversions values are shown on same natural gas bills.

  • The therm is the international unit of energy. A therm is equivalent to 100,000 BTU or British thermal units.
