1
A metal gate or fence section can be painted for a headboard. Measure across the width of the bed to determine the length of fencing needed for the mattress size.
-
2
Measure the fencing section that is chosen for the project. Fence sections can be purchased at a lumber yard, home improvement store or a salvage yard. Free fencing may be found on family property or at a landfill. Cut the section to fit behind the bed if it is too long. When buying new fencing at a lumber yard or home improvement store, you can request that an employee cut it to the size needed for the project.

Paint or stain the fencing to match the decor of the room. Dry thoroughly.

Mount the headboard to the wall behind the bed. Decorate the headboard with a tasteful string of silk ivy, a garden hat or a clip-on reading lamp. Decorate the headboard in a boy's room with a straw hat draped over a post and a bandanna tied to a second slat.
