How to Harvest Reishi Mushrooms

Perhaps the most important aspect of harvesting the reishi mushroom (Ganoderma lucidum) is correctly identifying it. Quite common in the southern United States, reishi is only found on the decaying wood of hardwood trees. It is most easily identified by its kidney shape, red color (with yellow and cream shades when it is young) and characteristic varnish-like luster. It is corky and soft to the touch, and on its underside are soft white (when young) or brown pores. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Inspect the reishi before harvesting it. Look for dark brown, bruised areas or small holes. These defects make the reishi unsuitable for harvest.

    • 2

Cut suitable reishi mushrooms from the trunk of the tree by sliding your knife along the trunk of the tree where the mushroom is attached.

    • 3

Cut the debris-covered base off of the mushroom with your knife. It is unsuitable for consumption.

    • 4

Place the reishi mushroom gently into your basket. Any bruises or tears will shorten the reishi mushroom's shelf life.
