Proper toenail care is not only important for good hygiene, it is also required to avoid painful infections, ingrown toenails and unsightly toes. 1
Lay the tissue flat on the floor. This will be used for collecting the clippings and will make cleanup quick and easy.
-
2
Place your first toenail into the clipper. Begin with your big toe and just let the clipper slide onto the nail comfortably without pressing too hard or deep.
-
-
3
Cut the nail using short clips rather than trying to get the entire nail in a single cut. Clip straight across the nail.
-
4
Avoid rounding or curving the toenail. If the sides are too short, they may grow into the tissue at the sides of your toes, a condition called ingrown toenails.
-
5
Cut each toenail, straight across. Aim to clip the nail so that it ends at the tip of your toe. Avoid cutting the nails too short because this can cause infection and discomfort.
-
6
Collect the nail clippings by bundling the tissue and discarding. File any rough areas of your nails by running your nail file over the area in a smooth, horizontal movement.
