How to Trim a Pomeranian

How to Trim a Pomeranian thumbnail
Trimming your Pomeranian's hair does not have to be hard.

Pomeranians are a small and moderately docile breed of dog. Trimming its hair is relatively easy. Even though it is a small dog breed, it tends to shed a lot, so keeping it trimmed avoids having dog hair all over your house. Some dogs can be temperamental and impatient, making trimming more difficult. It is advised that you keep dog treats on hand to give to your pet to distract it or to reward it for behaving as you cut its hair.

Things You'll Need

  • Electric razor or clippers
  • Scissors
  • Leash
  • Muzzle (optional)
  • Dog treats
  • Hair dryer

Instructions

    • 1

Spend at least 10 minutes prior to trimming your Pomeranian's hair petting it and making it feel at ease. If your dog is not groomed regularly, trimming its hair may be stressful. If you feel as though your dog may give you problems or attempt to bite you while you are trimming, tie its leash to a sturdy base and put a muzzle over its mouth.

    • 2

Turn your razor on and allow your dog to get used to it by sniffing it and hearing the noises it makes. Apply the razor slowly to your dog's body, allowing it time to get used to the vibrations and sensation of the razor cutting its hair.

    • 3

Begin by trimming your pet's head and ears with scissors. This is potentially the most sensitive area for trimming, so it is best to use scissors instead of a razor, so your dog does not get frightened by the noise of the razor being so close to its ears.

Next, move to its feet. Use the razor to trim with the hair in a vertical direction. Pay special attention to the hair between the pads of its feet, as this area can accumulate a lot of dirt and oil from your pet walking and playing outdoors.

    • 5

Next, trim your Pomeranian's hair on its back and sides. Use the razor to trim with the hair in a vertical direction. This is a very sensitive area for trimming, so be careful not to go too fast or hard.

    • 6

Next, trim your the dog's hair on its front and rear legs and underside. Use the razor to trim with the hair in a vertical direction.

    • 7

Turn your hair dryer on and run it over your dog's hair to remove any loose hair that has built up during the trimming process.
