How to Troubleshoot AC Adaptor Problems

How to Troubleshoot AC Adaptor Problems thumbnail
Many personal electronics require an AC adapter to run.

If you're like most people, your home is full of electronics that require an AC adapter to run or recharge their batteries. Typical devices include laptops, cell phones, MP3 players, PDAs, printers, scanners and speakers, among others. If your device isn't recharging or receiving power, a reasonable place to start troubleshooting is with the AC adapter.

Instructions

    • 1

Check that the outlet is live. Remove the AC adapter plug and insert the power cord of a device that is currently working on another outlet. If that device still works while plugged in, then the outlet is receiving power.

    • 2

Check the power strip. If you are using a power strip, check to see that it hasn't been tripped and that the power switch is in the ON position. Reset the power strip and see if this corrects the problem.

    • 3

Determine that you are using the correct adapter. Although many adapters look the same, they are usually made for specific devices and are not interchangeable. Check to make sure that you are not attempting to use a similar-looking adapter instead of the correct one for your device.

    • 4

Wiggle the ends of the adapter cable. The most common problem with AC adapters is wear at one end of the cable due to continuous bending and crimping. Keeping your fingers well away from it, try wiggling the plug inside the port of your device to see if you can create a connection. Likewise, try the other side of the cable near the wall outlet and see if the problem is at that end.

    • 5

Check the battery. If you are attempting to use the AC adapter to recharge a device, make sure that the battery has not failed. Over time, rechargeable batteries will degrade and be unable to hold a charge. You should also check to make sure that the battery is installed correctly. You can purchase a battery tester at your local electronics store.

    • 6

Check the connectors for damage. If either end of the AC adapter is damaged, it could prevent it from work. Look for frayed and worn cords, bent connectors and dirty contacts.

Tips & Warnings

  • When purchasing a new AC adapter, make sure that it matches the voltage requirements of your device or you could damage your electronics.
