How to Connect Rings in Tatting
Tatting is a craft based on the art of knotting and forming lace. Tatting can be done with an instrument called a shuttle or with a needle. There are actually hieroglyphic depictions of people doing a form of tatting as far back as 3,000 years ago. It became popular in Europe in the 17th century when it was considered to be coarse for a woman to have idle hands. One of the techniques used in tatting is connecting rings of stitches to one another.

1
Line up the rings you wish to connect. We are going to use a technique known as joining to connect the rings involved.
-
2
Find the working thread on your needle or shuttle. Take the ring you wish to join to the rest of the work and place it above the working thread.
-
-
3
Hold a small crochet hook in your dominant hand firmly. Hold your work in the other hand.
-
4
Use the crochet hook to gingerly pull the working thread through the ring you want joined. Make sure the thread is pulled through as far as possible.
-
5
Place the shuttle or needle within the working tread. Pull the work taut. Then pull the working thread and make sure it is also taut, but able to be wound around the shuttle or needle thread.
-
6
Finish the join by doing the second half of a double stitch. This will hold the joining in its place.
