How to Apply for a Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant

The Federal Supplemental Educational Grant (FSEOG) provides college grants to undergraduate students with low incomes. Typically, FSEOG is provided to supplement federal Pell Grants. FSEOG funds are distributed directly to colleges and universities who then disperse funds to needy students. FSEOG awards range from $100 to $4,000 per year. Not all colleges and universities participate in the FSEOG program.

Instructions

    • 1

Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) at www.FAFSA.gov. Complete your FAFSA before your school's yearly deadline because FSEOG funds are limited and may run out.

    • 2

Apply for a PIN at the FAFSA website so that you can sign your application electronically and also view reports concerning your eligibility once the application is processed.

    • 3

Check your FAFSA status after about five days and print your Student Aid Report (SAR) for your records.

    • 4

Contact your school's financial aid department to make sure they have received your reports. Ask if you will be considered for the FSEOG. Individual schools make the decision as to which students get the grants based on student need.
