How to Train a Cockatiel to Talk

Cockatiels can talk with practice.

Teaching a cockatiel to talk requires patience and diligence. As with all birds, the males usually have an easier time learning to talk than females. Choose simple words before moving on to phrases. Cockatiels can only say what they've heard and it's best to teach the birds when they are younger. Older birds have a more difficult time learning words. If you are teaching the cockatiel a trick, finish that trick before teaching another one.

Instructions

1. Choose a short word, under four letters, and repeat it over and over to the bird. Speak in a loud, clear voice. Do this for 10 to15 minutes three times a day. Chet Hastings, author of "Training Your Cockatiel to Talk," recommends taking a four hour break between the lessons.

2. Give the bird a treat when it says the word. A small sprig of millet spray is a favorite of birds, but if your cockatiel has a particular favorite, give him that.

3. Say one word a session. Say the word clearly so he can hear each sound. Too many words confuse the bird. Hastings recommends using the same vocal pitch each time you say the word.

Tips & Warnings

• Take toys out of the cage to keep your bird from becoming distracted. If you have multiple birds, you need to isolate the bird in a room alone during lessons.
