How to Sew With Patterns

How to Sew With Patterns thumbnail
Use patterns correctly to ensure the best possible sewing results.

Patterns help simplify the process of creating handmade clothing or accessories but the unfamiliar marks on a pattern can be intimidating to those new to sewing. While each pattern will contain specific directions to help you recreate the item pictured on the front of the envelope, most patterns use similar markings to guide you through the steps. Once you can recognize these marks, sewing with patterns is slightly less complicated and you can focus on practicing your technique instead of deciphering the directions.

Instructions

    • 1

Look at the back of the pattern's envelope to determine what size you need. Some patterns only have one size while others include a range of sizes. On patterns with multiple sizes, the finished measurements of the item are supplied to help you make your choice.

    • 2

Remove the pattern from the envelope and unfold it. The pattern is printed on thin paper, similar to tissue paper. You will also find instructions printed on thicker paper inside the envelope.

    • 3

Cut the pattern out along the solid lines marked for your desired size.

    • 4

Pin the pattern pieces onto your fabric. The instructions included with the pattern may contain a diagram to help you arrange the pattern pieces to minimize wasted fabric.

    • 5

Cut the fabric along the outer edge of the pattern pieces. Leave the pattern pieces attached to the fabric.

    • 6

Locate any triangles or arrows along the edges of the pattern pieces. Cut through the fabric from the outside edge to the point of the triangle to create a notch in the fabric. These notches will help you line up the fabric pieces later.

    • 7

Look for small circles on the pattern pieces. Use a fabric pencil to gently make a hole in the pattern inside the circle and mark the fabric underneath.

    • 8

Sew the pieces of fabric together following the directions included in the pattern envelope. Remove each paper pattern before you begin sewing to avoid confusing pattern pieces that look similar.

Tips & Warnings

  • Read all of the instructions included with the pattern thoroughly before you begin cutting your fabric or sewing. You should be able to visualize the project using the instructions before you begin to reduce the likelihood of making a mistake.

  • You can use tape to reassemble the pattern if you make a mistake while cutting out the pieces.

  • Look for patterns marked with "easy to sew" or "novice" descriptions when you first begin using patterns.
