How to Balance Pitta Dosha

Doshas are the metabolic humors of the human body according to the Indian medical practice of Ayurveda. Pitta is one component of the Tridosha system and refers to the fiery aspect of the body, including the metabolism. To maintain a healthy and productive system of doshas, you need to balance your pitta through a simple combination of food, lifestyle and exercise. You can incorporate some or all of the steps as needed to feel your best.

Instructions

    • 1

Schedule your meals so they are regular and spaced well every day. You should never have a painfully empty stomach when you sit down to a meal.

    • 2

Eat small snacks throughout the day if you start to feel hungry well before the next scheduled mealtime. Ripe, juicy fruit is a very good snack for calming excess pitta.

    • 3

Add sweet, tart and bitter seasonings and additions to the pitta foods you are having with your meals for a balanced way of creating flavors.

    • 4

Eliminate overly processed ingredients and seasonings, including sour, salty and acidic as they aggravate pitta.

    • 5

Use lots of cold, creamy and soft foods in your diet. Rice pudding, coconut milk and fruit smoothies are easy to eat and calm pitta.

    • 6

Keep grains and vegetables handy to use as a means of keeping your stomach full throughout the day without upsetting your pitta balance. Crackers, cereal and salads are perfect snack foods that you can take with you.

    • 7

Keep cool during the day by avoiding the high sun and not exercising when you are already hot. Going out and exerting yourself when you are hungry is also bad for pitta.

    • 8

Drink pitta teas along with your meals and snacks to keep your body cool from within and to help digest your food.

Tips & Warnings

  • Partaking in aquatic sports is a great way to exercise without upsetting pitta and overheating.

  • Do not skip meals or fast or extended periods of time as it will interfere with your pitta.
