How to Detect IEEE1394 Devices in Linux

How to Detect IEEE1394 Devices in Linux thumbnail
You can detect IEEE devices in Linux.

IEEE1394 is a Firewire interface device connector which transfers data at fast speeds between external Firewire devices and your computer. Most new versions of Linux have an auto-detect feature that automatically mounts hardware and makes it accessible. If you plugged in your IEEE1394 device, you can check to see if Linux has detected it.

Instructions

    • 1

Open a command shell. The path is different for every version of Linux, but it is Accessories > Applications > Terminal in Ubuntu, the most popular Linux distribution as of 2010.

    • 2

Plug in your IEEE1394 device. Type "dmeg," followed to "Enter." This displays a comprehensive list of working devices on your computer, along with their connection points, such as USB, IEEE and PCMCIA.

    • 3

Slowly scroll down the list of devices until you find one called "IEEE1394." This means that the system has detected the device and it is working properly.
