How to Assign Repetitive Tasks to Keys in Open Office

The OpenOffice suite of software allows you to create a macro for a repetitive task and then assign a key or combination of keys to the macro. The task is then performed automatically when you press the key or combination of keys. The macro can be created for a single document, only one of the programs or all of the programs in the suite.

Instructions

  1. Create a Macro

      Click on the "Tools" menu at the top of any OpenOffice program.

      Scroll over the "Macros" option.

      Click the "Record Macro". A small Record screen will appear to let you know that your actions are being recorded.

      Perform the task that you want to automate.

      Click the "Stop Recording" button in the Record screen.

      Save the macro.

    Assign a Key

      Click the "Tools" menu.

      Scroll over the "Customize" option.

      Choose the "Keyboard" option. The Customize dialog box will appear.

      Choose "OpenOffice.org Macros" from the Categories menu.

      Click on the macro you just created in the Function menu.

      Choose the shortcut key that you want to assign the macro to in the Shortcut Keys menu.

      Click the "OK" button to save the changes.

Tips & Warnings

  • Be careful that you don't assign the macro to keys that are already being used for system or program tasks.
