Hanging flower baskets add personality and life to any house.

Flower baskets can add charm, personality and life to a patio, balcony and front-yard garden. Although it is possible to purchase a hanging basket premade that allows you to simply hang it up and enjoy it, it is a rather expensive option in comparison to a homemade hanging basket. When you create a homemade hanging flower basket, you are in control of the basket, the flowers, the arrangement and the overall appearance. When the basket is done and hanging outside, it is a rewarding feeling. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Place your plastic hanging baskets of choice out on a table. While metal baskets can look better than plastic baskets, plastic helps maintain the water better in the basket, as metal tends to dry out faster. Plastic baskets allow the soil to absorb the available water as it needs it.

    • 2

Sort your flowers for the hanging baskets if you are making more than one at a time. Each basket should have a center flower that grows upward, smaller flowers surrounding the perimeter of the main flower, and cascading flowers that can hang off the sides of the basket.

    • 3

Pick colors that compliment the area you are planning to hang the flower baskets in; use bright, bold colors if you want a strong reaction. You also want to pick flowers that need the same amount of sunlight and water, as they will be in the same basket, using the same soil and water.

    • 4

Put on your gardening gloves. Mix the soil and fertilizer together using your hands. Add the soil mixture to the flower basket, but do not fill it completely.

    • 5

Plant the main tall flower in the middle of the basket by placing it in the soil and surrounding the roots of the flower with the soil mixture.

    • 6

Add the smaller surrounding flowers in the same manner by placing the flowers' roots in the basket and covering the roots with the soil mixture. When planting, leave some space in between them, as they will grow and expand.

    • 7

Add the flowers to the basket that will hang off the side. These flowers should be planted near the perimeter of the basket, so they do not interfere with the other plants directly.

    • 8

Water your flower baskets to give the new flowers and roots fresh water in the new soil. You need to water the flowers at least once a day; water twice a day if the weather is hot and dry.
