Click "Start" and select "Computer." Right-click on your hard drive and select "Properties." Select the "Tools" tab and click on "Defragment Now." Perform this action on all hard drives installed on your computer. The process can last anywhere between 2 hours to an entire day depending on the size of the drive and how much information is present.

Click "Start" and type "msconfig" in the "Start Search" text box. Select the "Startup" tab. De-select the boxes in the columns next to programs you do not need to open at start up, such as media players, word processors and computer games. Avoid de-selecting unfamiliar programs or computer components.

Click "Start" and select "Computer." Right-click on your hard drive and select properties. Click "Disk Cleanup" in the "General" tab. Click either "My files only" or "Files from all users on this computer." Place a check mark in the box next to the type of the files you wish to remove, especially temporary Internet files, recycle bin and compressed old files. Click "OK" and click on "Delete files" in the confirmation window that pops up. Perform this action on all hard drives installed on your computer.

Click "Start" and select "Control Panel." Click "Network and Internet" and click on "Internet Options." Select the "Connections" tab and click "LAN settings." De-select any boxes and click the "OK" button twice. Exit the "Control Panel."
