How to Book a DJ for a School Dance
The music entertainment choice is probably the most important aspect of a successful school dance. While live music can be a good choice, DJs can offer a variety of music genres to please all music tastes of your attendees. Depending upon your budget constraints, your choices can vary between a classmate's Uncle Steve, or a DJ who also provides Karaoke or other entertainment in addition to spinning the hits. Finding and Hiring a DJ

Select your date well in advance of looking for and booking a DJ. This will give you more options to choose from and usually the best ones are booked first.

Measure and gauge the space you will have available for the DJ's gear. Some DJ's systems may be too big for the allotted area of set-up.

Decide how much your school or class can afford to pay a DJ. Anticipate an average of $1200; however costs can range from $500 to $5,000 (according to prices in 2010).

Check with past dance organizers at your school or in the local area for DJ recommendations. Many DJs will lower their prices if the event is a repeat, or offers the possibility for regular gigs.

Ask questions of a potential DJ hires. Examples of questions might include: "What time will you arrive for set-up?"-- Most DJs need a minimum of an hour. "Do you have a back-up system or DJ in case of illness or equipment failure?" Or "Do you have a song list and can guests make requests?" If desired, you should ask, "Do you offer any additional options such as karaoke, contests or props?"

Negotiate costs and a down payment amount. Ask for a contract. Contracts should include date, time and place of the event, cost, liability insurance and any particulars agreed upon by both parties.

To help ensure professionalism,select a DJ who is a member of the American Disc Jockey Association. Ask for references. Advise the DJ of the formality of the event. Formal dances require formal dress attire.
Check with your school before hiring a DJ. There may be special approvals you need or a blacklist of various entertainment providers. Many schools require background checks for any adults on school property. Know the school requirements ahead of time.
