How to Study for a Spelling Test in Elementary School
Those spelling tests for your elementary school child can be as frustrating for you, the parent, as it is for the child. Cramming for a test the night before is not the best solution, but by studying all week long in small chunks of time, a child has time to learn the words and patterns and internalize the concepts. Everyone learns using three basic modalities: visual, auditory and kinesthetic. By combining these, children learn the best. Vary the study methods to help a child to fully learn the spelling patterns.

1
Ask your child to write each word three times on paper. While writing each word, ask your child to spell it out loud as he is writing the letters. The repetition and kinesthetic movements help the brain remember how to spell the word.
-
2
Give your child a mock spelling test. Call out each word as your child writes it on paper, mimicking how the child will be taking the test in school. Parents may mistakingly ask the child to spell the word out loud instead of writing it, which may confuse the child as the tests in school are most often written.

Play visual games. Spell the word three times on paper in a multiple choice test format: one time correctly and two times incorrectly making a common mistake. Ask your child to choose the correct spelling of the word.

Use a computer game at websites such as spellingcity.com and kidsspell.com where you type the spelling words into a form then your child can play games and practice with the words all week.
