Onkyo is a digital audio receiver most often used in surround sound systems. This means the Onkyo receiver is capable of connecting to your television and providing stereo surround sound for all of your movies, video games and television programs (if surround sound is available). Onkyo devices are also capable of receiving and playing all HD audio formats.

Determine if you are connecting your Onkyo receiver to a standard definition television or an HD television. The cable connections are going to be different for both TV sets.

Plug the red and white RCA cables into the "Audio Out" ports on the back of the television. However, if you are using an HD TV, connect a HDMI cable into an available HDMI port on the TV set.

Connect the other end of the RCA cables into the "Audio In" ports on the back of the Onkyo receiver. There are going to be a variety of different audio in ports, each marked for a different device. Use the audio in ports marked "TV." Insert the HDMI cable into an available HDMI port on the back of the Onkyo receiver if you are connecting an HD television (take note of the number next to the HDMI port on the audio receiver).

Power on the Onkyo receiver. If using RCA cables press the "TV" button to begin listening to the audio from the television. However, with the HDMI connection you need to press the HDMI button, followed by the cable connection number. Once done, you can enjoy the HD audio coming from the television.
