Oil consumption of your auto can be a minor or a major repair.

Before determining various methods for minimizing overconsumption of motor oil, first ascertain whether your vehicle has an oil leak. Oil leaks are the primary cause for excessive oil consumption in automobiles. If there is no leak, consider other ways to save on oil. According to Performance Oil Technology, "General Motors defines acceptable oil usage at 1 quart of oil per 1,000 miles in some references, and 1 quart of oil in 2,000 miles in other references." According to AA1Car, if your vehicle is using more than a quart or more of oil per 500 miles, you are experiencing overconsumption of oil.

Instructions

    • 1

Inspect vehicle for an oil leak. If an oil leak is detected, the services of a professional and certified mechanic will be needed for repair.

    • 2

If you do not have an oil leak, drain the engine oil and replace the oil filter.

    • 3

Add crankcase additive to engine after an oil change (refill). During the oil change, instead of your normal oil usage, add two cans (30 ounces) of Alemite CD 2 for Oil Burning, in place of one quart of your regular oil.

    • 4

Drive your vehicle at a low speed of approximately 20 to 35 miles per hour for at least 50 miles before driving at an expressway speed.

Tips & Warnings

  • According to AA1Car, a valve cover, timing cover or oil pan gasket can easily be replaced should the other procedures fail to resolve your oil consumption. However, should your oil consumption be the result of an oil leak, it will have to be fixed by a mechanic.
