How to Troubleshoot Dymo 400

Technology has done a lot to make life easier. Computers and compatible hardware, such as printers and label writers, have made writing, filing and mailing as simple as the click of a button. However, there are times when technology can turn, causing frustration and costing time if you don't know how to deal with a problem presented by your printer. Rather than wasting precious time, it helps to have a resource to refer to when, for instance, your Dymo 400 LabelWriter refuses to work correctly.

Instructions

  1. Error Message: Printer Is Out Of Paper

    • 1

Look inside the Dymo printer to make sure that the label roll is held firmly in place by the spools and that the spindle is sitting in the cradle correctly. Many problems start with the label rolls sitting incorrectly within the printer.

    • 2

Refer to the user's manual that came with the Dymo 400 to make sure that the correct labels are being used. Dymo LabelWriters work only with labels made specifically for Dymo printers.

    • 3

Remove any print tasks from the queue, and then disconnect the Dymo 400's power supply for a few seconds before reconnecting. If you installed your LabelWriter before you loaded labels into it, the firmware might not recognize that the printer has labels in it. The support page on Dymo's website has a firmware upgrade utility in case disconnecting and reconnecting the power supply does not solve this problem.

    Problem: Label Stuck Inside Printer

    • 4

Feed the cleaning card through the Dymo 400 once or twice, three to four times if necessary. Cleaning cards come with new printers.

    • 5

Gently pull a stuck label to remove it from the printer if it remains fixed in the printer after using the cleaning card.

    • 6

Return the Dymo 400 to the dealer if the problem continues. If the problem has persisted, the printer needs to be repaired.

Problem: Too Many Labels Come Out

    • 7

Make sure that the correct labels are being used. Labels for the Dymo 400 have an oval hole; which the optical sensor will be looking for, between each label. Using non-compatible labels will cause the printer to work incorrectly.

    • 8

If the correct labels are being used, make sure they are loaded correctly. The oval hole between each label should be at the left side within the printer, and the label rolls should be secured firmly by the spools.

    • 9

Clean the optical sensor by feeding the cleaning card through the Dymo 400 a few times. This will clean not only the optical sensor, but also the roller and the print head.

    • 10

Return the Dymo 400 to the dealer if the problem persists. If the other troubleshooting steps do not stop too many labels from feeding out when printing, the optical sensor might be damaged and need repair.

Tips & Warnings

  • For more extensive problems or errors not addressed in this tutorial, you can access the customer-support section of the Dymo website. Enter the error message in the search box, click on search, and choose from the list of solutions that the site gives you. From there you will be provided with steps to resolve your problem.

  • Contact Dymo's customer-service department if none of the solutions found in the user's manual or on the troubleshooting website solves your problem. The phone number(s) can be found in the user's manual or on the contact page of the website. You will be able to speak with a technical-support specialist who can talk you through a solution.

  • If you don't have the time to wait for "live" assistance on the phone, e-mail or instant messaging support may be available. These options can save time and, in some cases, can save money if the company charges for live technical support over the phone.

  • Some charges might apply if you contact technical support. In most cases the support itself is free, but long-distance charges apply if a toll-free number for technical support is not available.
