How to Become a Church Minister
Church ministers hold numerous responsibilities, including preaching at their local church, providing counseling to the congregation, maintaining the church, performing wedding and christening ceremonies and organizing relief for the community in times of disaster. There are no formal education requirements to become a minister, but a background in religious studies can prove useful, as ministers must always be willing to learn and grow within their faith.

Attend a university program and get a degree in theology or religious studies. Many of these university programs also help prepare you for tasks, such as sermon preparation and congregation counseling and support. While it is not a requirement in all churches for you to hold a university degree, it can be a useful tool.

Become ordained. Ordination grants you the legal ability to perform weddings and funeral rights. You can become ordained through numerous churches online after filling out an application and paying a small fee, but many churches will expect more from a potential minister.

Search for a church in need of a minister. Numerous online classifieds sites like Church Jobs, Ministry Jobs and Join God provide national listings of churches in search of a leader.

Set up an interview with the staff of the church you are interested in working.

Attend services at the church before your interview to get to know the congregation. You may even be able to assist the current minister in his duties before taking over the position, which will also give you time to familiarize yourself with the congregation.
