How to Make a Simple Design on a Sheet Cake
Making simple designs on a sheet cake is much cheaper than contracting with a professional baker to create an advanced design. Using store-bought frosting tubes for letters and shapes can be cost-effective and utilize your creativity as well. The sheet cake can either be store-bought or a homemade cake. The frosting should come in at least two colors and in two separate frosting tubes with tips. The designs are made by squeezing the tube and directing the tip around the cake. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Cut the tip off the first frosting tube. Decide what the cake should say. A birthday cake may simply say "Happy Birthday!" Slowly squeeze the tube while directing the tip of the tube towards the cake. Hold the tip half a centimeter above the top of the cake. Move the tip around the cake into the form of words that will become the message of the cake.

2
Add accent lines and dots throughout the cake with the other tube/color of frosting, but at least two inches away from the message. Create swirls and waves. Create a border at the base of the cake by starting at the bottom of one corner and tracing around the cake until the border returns to the beginning.

Create flowers (if applicable to the type of cake) by pointing the tip straight down at the corners of the cake. Squeeze out a generous amount of frosting (about the size of a quarter) in a disc shape, and then once more slightly smaller, and once more just a bit smaller (think a quarter, nickel and penny stacked). Use the tip to hollow out the middle of the form and create the rose shape.
