How to Replace the Fuel Pump on a '97 Chevy Blazer

If your 1997 Chevy Blazer stops running and acts like it is out of gas, you may have a bad fuel pump. You can start by changing the fuel filter, as this is cheap and easy. But if that doesn't work, you probably need to replace your fuel pump. You will need to take the fuel tank off the Blazer to change the fuel pump, but you don't have to be a great mechanic to do it. If you replace the fuel pump yourself, you can save hundreds of dollars in labor costs.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

  1. Fuel Pump Removal

    • 1

Raise the back end of the Blazer up with the jack and lower it onto jack stands. Remove the fuel pump relay in the fuse block, which is located in the engine compartment on the driver's side. Start the Blazer and let it stall. This will relieve the pressure in the fuel system.

    • 2

Disconnect the negative cable from the battery.

    • 3

Climb under the back of the Blazer. Loosen the clamp around the the fuel-tank hose with a ratchet. Remove the hose from the tank. Remove the shield from the fuel tank with a ratchet.

    • 4

Place the floor jack directly under the middle of the fuel tank. Raise the jack until it is touching the tank. Remove the two metal straps holding the tank by detaching the bolts on the straps with a ratchet.

    • 5

Lower the tank enough to reach the two fuel lines and the vapor line on top of the tank. Disconnect these lines by pressing in on the connectors and pulling them off. Lower the tank to the ground.

    • 6

Turn the locking ring counterclockwise to remove it. You will need to start it by placing a flat-head screwdriver on a metal tab and tapping it with a hammer. Remove the fuel pump assembly from the tank and discard the O-ring. Remove the fuel pump from the assembly by pulling the bottom down and then out of its seat.

    Fuel Pump Replacement

    • 7

Insert the new fuel pump in the fuel pump seat and put the fuel pump assembly back into the tank. Place the new O-ring around the assembly and insert the locking ring. Place the flat-head screwdriver on the metal tab and tap it clockwise to tighten the locking ring.

    • 8

Lift the fuel tank with the floor jack until it is almost all the way up but you can still reach the fuel pump assembly. Place the two fuel lines and the vapor line on the fuel pump assembly. Push them on until they click into place. Pull on them gently to make sure that they've locked.

    • 9

Raise the fuel pump into position. Replace the two metal straps that hold it in place. Tighten all the bolts with a ratchet.

    • 10

Reattach the filler hose to the fuel tank and tighten the hose clamp. Reinsert the fuel pump relay and reconnect the negative battery cable. Raise the Blazer above the jack stands. Remove the jack stands and lower the Blazer to the ground.

    • 11

Start the Blazer to see if your fuel pump is working.

Tips & Warnings

  • Do not smoke while working on the fuel pump.

  • Be very careful when letting the fuel pump down. Make sure it is balanced properly on the floor jack so that it doesn't fall.
