Tips & Warnings

  • If the map is not clear, contact the Main Street Station at 800-872-7245 to ask for specific directions between I-95 and the parking lots. Keep in mind that downtown Richmond consists entirely of less-than-desirable neighborhoods. It might be best not to park at all and to ask someone to drop you off at the station. If you are simply there to pick someone up, leaving your car in a parking lot is probably fine. In order to get a monthly parking permit in one of these lots, contact 804-523-3328.

  • Prepare to pay for parking. As of October 2010, the first hour is free. After the first hour, parking will cost $1 per hour. There is a $5 daily maximum and a $60 monthly charge. The machines in the parking lots will accept either cash or credit cards. Exit 74B is in the middle of downtown Richmond, where I-95 becomes quite urban. Be careful not to miss the exit. Downtown Richmond's streets are also quite narrow---and some of them are cobblestone streets. The station is open from 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. on weekdays and from 9 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. on weekends. Make sure to call with questions onlu when an attendant will be available to answer the phone. Also, arrive at the station early because check-in lines often are long. Note that Amtrak trains often are delayed, so keep that in mind when scheduling a visit.
