How to Treat Marble for a Countertop
Marble is a natural stone, quarried from the earth and frequently used in the home for kitchen countertops. Marble countertops lend classic appeal to your kitchen and will last for years to come when properly cared for. This natural stone is porous in nature and can absorb stains that are left to sit. It also scratches easily or develops etching stains when not cleaned with the proper materials. Things You'll Need
- Chamois
- Bucket
- Clean cloths
- Drop hand dish-washing liquid
- Bowls
- Talcum powder
- 20 percent hydrogen peroxide
- Spoon
- Plastic wrap

Wet a chamois in a bucket of plain water. Squeeze out the excess liquid so the chamois is as dry as possible.

Wipe down your marble countertop each day with the dampened chamois. Follow by drying with a clean dry cloth. A chamois will clean the surface of your countertop without leaving any streaks on the surface.

Place one drop of hand dish-washing liquid in a bowl with a cup of warm water. Dip a clean cloth in the soap solution and wipe down your marble countertops with the solution once per week. Rinse with a clean cloth dampened with water and dry with a towel.

Remove stains from your marble countertop by drawing them out with a poultice. Mix talcum powder and enough 20 percent hydrogen peroxide to make a thick paste. Cover the stain on the marble with the poultice and a piece of plastic wrap and allow it to dry.

Scoop up the poultice materials and wipe the counter down with plain water. Dry with a clean towel.

Tips & Warnings
Wipe up spills immediately to keep them from staining your marble countertop.
Set drinks or hot dishes on coasters and hot pads to protect the counter's surface.
Do not use abrasive cleaners or cleaners that contain vinegar or lemon juice as these can harm the surface of your marble countertop.
