How to Find the File-Type Association in Firefox

Sometimes when software is installed or updated, it will change the file association of certain file types. The file association controls what program will be used by default whenever a particular file type is opened. The Firefox web browser allows you to easily customize these file associations to match the programs that you prefer to use. The process is quick and easy and allows you to take full control over what programs are used any time a file is launched from within the Firefox browser.

Open the Firefox web browser and locate the Menu bar. The Menu bar is a thin strip of text links at the top of the browser, starting with "File, Edit, View." This menu bar can be located just under the page title bar. If your browser is configured to hide the menu bar, you will have to press the "Alt" key for it to appear.

Go to the browser's configuration options. Click the "Tools" menu link. Note that Mac users will see "Firefox" instead of "Tools." After clicking "Tools," click "Options." A box will open featuring the browser's options.

Go to the file-association options. From within the browser's Options box, click the "Content" tab at the top. Look near the bottom of the Content page to find "File Associations" section. Newer versions of Firefox have an "Applications" tab that takes you directly to the file-associations section.

Change the file associations to meet your personal preferences. Be certain that you are associating a file type with an application that is capable of opening that file. You wouldn't want to associate MP3 files with Microsoft Word, for example. After you have finished configuring your options, click "OK."

Restart your web browser. Restarting the browser will make sure that all changes are active in your current session.

Tips & Warnings

  • These changes only effect the file association for files launched by the web browser. Windows file associations must be edited separately if you want them to be changed across the computer as a whole.
