How to Send an SMS Using Gmail

How to Send an SMS Using Gmail thumbnail
Receiving texts takes less time on a cell phone than reading an email.

If you ever found yourself in a situation where you do not have access to a cell phone, but would like to send someone a SMS message directly to his or her cell phone, Gmail by Google offers a solution to that problem by allowing users to send text messages through Gmail's chat feature. The receiver of the text message can opt to return the text back to the sender using a designated phone number for that Gmail account.

Instructions

    • 1

Click on the "Settings" link located near the upper-right portion of the screen.

    • 2

Click on the "Labs" tab. Navigate down to the application labeled "Text Messaging (SMS) in Chat" and click enable. At the top of the "Labs" screen, click the "Save Changes" button.

    • 3

Enter the recipients phone number in the box just under "Chat" that says "Search, add, or invite." Alternately, you could add a cell phone number to an existing contact in your list.

    • 4

Roll the mouse over the contact and select the "Send SMS" option. Enter the desired message and click send.

Tips & Warnings

  • The recipient will receive the text from a number with a 406 area code.

  • The recipient of the text message may be subject to standard texting fees.
