Troubleshooting an aftermarket car alarm is relatively simple. You don't even need any tools or an instruction manual. Though cars are meant to protect your car from theft, they sometimes have problems of their own. The most common car alarm problems include: car alarms not sounding when they should be going off, alarms not activating on their own and alarms going off at inappropriate times. With a few simple steps, you can troubleshoot your car alarm problems at home without having to pay a professional to diagnose those problems.

Perform a check on the other systems in your car. Sometimes, there are other problems going on; don't assume the problem is your car alarm. For example, if your car won't start, there's probably a problem with your starter or battery.

Disable your alarm manually. Oftentimes, you will need to switch your car to valet mode in order to figure out what the problem is. You can do this by putting the key in the ignition and holding down the push key until the light stays a solid color.

Check your sensors. Sometimes if you car alarm keeps going off at inappropriate times, it means your sensors are too sensitive. You can fix the problem by changing your settings.

Disable any other devices that you have in your car. At times, things like GPS devices, cell phones and radar detectors can interfere with your car alarm system. Sometimes, disconnecting these items can solve the problem.
