How to Fix the Audio Configuration on a Computer

By Editorial Team

Computer owners may experience audio configuration issues that interfere with the enjoyment of sound of their computers. If you encounter such problems, you may be unable to play MP3 files, listen to your favorite songs online or even hear the audio clicks of your mouse. Fortunately, if you know how to work with your computer's Device Manager, many audio configuration issues can be easily fixed.

Inspect your computer speaker connection. The connecting cable must fit securely into the sound port at the back of your laptop or desktop computer. The sound port will be labeled "Audio Out," "Speaker" or something similar, depending on the brand of your sound card.

Locate and examine the "Sound" icon in the lower right corner of your desktop. Look for an icon that resembles a small speaker. Make sure that a small red icon does not sit on top of the speaker icon, as this mutes the sound on your computer. If you do see a red icon here, click once on the sound icon. A small pop-up window opens. Locate the "Mute" box near the bottom of the pop-up window and click once to remove the check mark from the box.

Click on the "Start" menu, "Settings," and then click on "Control Panel."

Click on "System and Maintenance." Click "Device Manager."

Click on the "Sound, video and game controllers" icon. Then, right-click on "High Definition Audio Device" and "Update Driver Software."

Click "Yes" when you see the software update prompt. When the process concludes, reboot your machine to fix the audio configuration on your computer.
