Kia gave the popular Sportage SUV a relatively simple fuel pump design. The fuel pump is easy to access because of an access cover in the rear cargo area. Many other vehicles must be lifted and supported to gain access to the fuel pump. The fuel pump is located in the same place in all year models of the Sportage, including the redesigned model.

Step 1

Relieve the pressure in the fuel lines before beginning the procedure. Remove the gas cap and the fuel pump relay (labeled) from the engine fuse box.

Step 2

Start the engine and let it run until it shuts off. This will relieve the majority of the pressure and fuel from the fuel lines. Disconnect the negative battery cable after relieving fuel system pressure.

Step 3

Open the rear hatch and fold the rear seats down. Remove the cargo liner and carpet mat from the cargo area to make the fuel tank access panel visible.

Step 4

Remove the screws around the fuel tank access cover and flip the cover open. Disconnect the electrical connections from the fuel pump. Disconnect the fuel in and out lines from the pump by removing the hose clamps. If the lines are not labeled, mark them to remember which one is in and out.

Step 5

Remove the screws or bolts mounting the fuel pump assembly. Older models have eight screws. Newer models have bolts that require a socket wrench to remove. Wrap the fuel pump assembly with a rag or towel to minimize spilling, and then twist and remove.

Step 6

Install the new fuel pump and mount it with the screws or bolts. Reconnect the fuel lines and the electrical connections. Reinstall the fuel tank access cover and replace the carpet. Reconnect the negative battery cable.
